The story behind the name:

The Black Middens are the dark, jagged rocks that guard the mouth of the River Tyne. For centuries they’ve been feared by sailors, wrecking countless ships on their sharp edges. Local legend tells of lanterns lit by wreckers—like the infamous Jingling Geordie—tricking vessels into thinking they were safe at anchor, only to dash them against the stones where their cargo could be plundered.
