Old-school method. Strong, reliable results.
The stovetop (or moka pot) is a timeless way to brew rich, full-bodied coffee without the need for fancy gear. Perfect for strong morning cups or milk-based drinks, it delivers a bold flavour that’s somewhere between espresso and cafetière. No frills, no fuss — just proper coffee done right.
What You’ll Need:
- Stovetop/Moka Pot
- Freshly ground coffee
- Scales (optional, but ideal)
- Kettle or tap for pre-heated water
The Recipe:
- Coffee: 16g (coarse grind — similar to sea salt)
- Water: 250ml
- Brew Temp: 94°C
- Brew Time: ~2:30 minutes (from heat-on to pour)
Step-by-Step:
-
Unscrew your stovetop and separate the three parts:
- Base — for water
- Filter basket — for coffee
- Top chamber — where the brewed coffee ends up
- Fill the base with hot water, just below the pressure valve.
- Add 16g of coarse-ground coffee to the basket. Don’t tamp — just level it off.
- Assemble the brewer and make sure everything is tight and sealed.
- Place on medium to high heat. Keep the lid open and stay close.
- As the water heats, pressure forces it through the coffee. When you hear that classic gurgling sound, it’s nearly done.
- Remove from heat immediately to avoid burning the coffee.
- Give it a quick stir, pour, and enjoy while it’s hot.
Dial It In:
- If it bubbles too fast, turn your heat down next time.
- If it takes ages to brew, try a slightly finer grind or pre-heat your water.
- Clean your pot regularly — old oils ruin fresh flavour.
This one’s old-school but still holds its own. Strong, rich, and great with milk — or neat if you like it bold.
