The AeroPress is a cracking bit of kit — a one-cup brewer that uses pressure to punch out a bold, clean cup. It’s versatile enough to handle both espresso and filter roasts, but for this recipe, we’d recommend sticking with a filter roast to get the best out of it.
What You’ll Need:
- AeroPress or AeroPress Go
- AeroPress micro filters or Fellow Prismo attachment
- Coffee grinder
- Coffee scales
The Recipe:
- Coffee: 12g (medium grind — like caster sugar)
- Water: 200ml
- Brew temp: 93–96°C
- Milk temp (if using): 55–65°C
We’re going filter-style here, so choose a filter roast for the cleanest, sweetest result.
Step-by-Step:
- Get everything prepped — gear clean, kettle hot, beans weighed and ready.
- Pop your filter in the cap and give it a good rinse with hot water.
- Heat your water to 97°C (or just off the boil).
- Set the AeroPress up inverted — wider ends top and bottom, cap facing up.
- Grind your 12g of coffee medium (about the texture of caster sugar).
- Add the grounds to the chamber and give it a gentle shake to level it out.
- Place the AeroPress on your scales and zero it.
- Start your timer and pour in 200g of water in slow circles — get everything wet.
- Stir 5 times, then screw the cap on tight.
- At 1:45, flip the AeroPress onto your cup or server.
- At 2:00, press down slowly and firmly — aim for a full press by 2:20–2:30. Stop when you hear the hiss.
Dial It In:
- Brew takes longer than 30 seconds to press? Go coarser.
- Brew's done too fast? Tighten up your grind.
- Using a hand grinder? Start at fully tight and loosen by 3–4 clicks.
This method gives you a clean, strong cup with bags of flavour — without overcomplicating it. Great at home, in a camper van, or anywhere you want proper coffee without a machine.
